Urban Deva Beauty:
Oskia Spa
Over the last couple of years there’s been a lot of hype about what goes into our beauty products, but here at Urban Deva we’ve always known natural, organic, and paraben-free is the only way to go, which is why our current obsession is Oskia Spa in London’s Covent Garden. ‘Oskia’ comes from an ancient Greek word that means to ‘deliver beauty’. And at Oskia this is precisely what they do. Their philosophy focuses on skin nutrition, being on the cutting edge of natural beauty and helping the skin heal itself. That all sounds good on paper, but what we really wanted to know was how? To understand the Oskia beauty line one must first understand MSM, the ingredient at the heart of all their products. So first, a quick and painless science lesson.
Methyl Sulphonyl Methane (MSM) is a natural form of organic sulfonyl sulfur compound, which occurs naturally in all living organisms. It is the purest form of sulphur and one of the fundamental minerals essential to sustaining life and helping the body renew cells. It is also integral to the production of collagen and elastin, the stuff that keeps skin looking young and healthy. So you can see why Oskia swears by it.
While we’re on the subject of ingredients, it’s also encouraging to know that Oskia products not only smell light and sophisticated and have a luxurious texture, but they also supply the skin with a near-complete diet of vital cell nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins/amino acids, glucides, and essential fatty acids), leaving you with a younger, more radiant glow. And it’s a British brand, so you can feel good about that too. So now you know what goes into the products, back to the spa…
Oskia offer a wide range of treatments ranging from 45 minutes of Micro-Needling Collagen Induction Therapy to a 90-minute Detoxifying and Immune Boosting Face and Body Treatment, but on this particular visit I gave the 75-minute Signature Oskia Glow Facial a go. This bespoke facial is customised to meet your skin’s needs and after a quick skin assessment my therapist decided a few extractions, a deep hydrating mask, and a massage with blend of oils and waxes from the skin-smoothing massage candle would do the job.
I settled down onto the water mattress and was almost instantaneously lulled into a state of complete and utter bliss by the sound of crashing waves and running water. I barely even minded the extractions, which happened early on in the treatment, after which my skin was thoroughly cleansed and calmed making sure when I left the spa I wasn’t a red, splotchy mess (a courtesy not all therapists provide). To top it all off, my therapist administered an extensive pampering hand, foot, shoulder, and head massage that was second to none.
I was then escorted to the relaxation room, aptly named the Library with its thoughtful selection of reading materials, for a steaming mug of herbal tea. Now I must admit, I am not the type to linger after a treatment ― I usually forego the niceties and hurriedly reapply my mascara, grab my bag, and rush to my next appointment. Not this time. I felt so calm and revitalised that I sat sipping my tea and reading magazines until I could muster the strength to face the bustling city that awaited me outside. And even then, it was much easier than I remembered.
